About The Grant

Movies that Matter supports film events in their initial phases and invites applications for Start-Up and Impact Grants, for initiatives working with the agenda of creating and promoting movies that stir the debate on human rights, sustainability and the fight against injustice. It is to promote the screenings of human rights cinema worldwide, Movies that Matter offers grants to human rights film events in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, especially in countries with limited resources and freedom of the press. These events can take various forms, such as human rights film festivals, LGBT film festivals and mobile cinema projects but do not include film production.

Projects should be submitted and executed by a local organisation that is well-connected with the target audience or in close cooperation with, human rights organisations. The application must consist of a well-wrought and complete plan and budget. The selected organisation or venture will get funding within the maximum limit of €100,000 and they will also receive support in the form of exposure and guidance.

Timeline

The deadline for application is 15 April 2019 and the results of the selection will be announced about two months after the application deadline, i.e. mid-June 2019. Thus projects starting before 1 July 2019 cannot be considered for the 15 April selection round.

Focus Area

The focus of the festival is that the Film screenings will contribute to a discussion about human rights in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East or Eastern Europe.

Grant/Award Information

The maximum support of a start-up grant is €7,500 per project.

The maximum support of an impact grant is €10,000 per project.

Eligibility Criteria

Movies that Matter prefers films that are independently produced. Screenings of educational films or NGO outreach films are not supported. The project must take place in one of the countries as defined on the DAC List of ODA recipients and/or countries where press freedom is seriously at stake, in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle East or Eastern Europe. With respect to this DAC List of ODA recipients, priority is given to projects in “Least Developed Countries”, “Other Low-Income Countries” and “Lower Middle-Income Countries".

The Movies that Matter Festival founded in 2006 (formerly the Amnesty International Film Festival ) is an annual international film and debate festival of the committed film in The Hague. In addition to the annual festival, Movies that Matter On Tour offers monthly film and debate in some sixteen Dutch cities, the education program provides film lessons on human rights and International Support helps to show films about human rights in developing countries and where press freedom is at stake. Movies that Matter believes that a film camera is a powerful tool against social indifference. They screen films in combination with a vast expansion programme, in the form of discussions, introductions, Q&A sessions, workshops and teaching aids.
