THE NEED

THE NEED

Sri Vidyanikethan school has a pathetic sanitation situation today, with only 7 toilets available for the 450 students and 21 staff members. The standard requirements for a school of this size is 24 toilets, and the insufficient number of toilets has resulted in the school having to resort to fixed toilet timings for the students.

Imagine having to wait for your ‘slot’ for something as natural as wanting to use the toilet. The gravity of this problem was evident when 8 children from 4th grade reported urine infection last year. This resulted in parents taking permission to give their kids extra time so that they could use the washroom of a nearby home. The dearth of toilets poses an even bigger problem for adolescent girls who sometimes need to leave school during class time because they need to use the washroom during their menstruation cycle. The scale of this problem is corroborated through nation-wide figures which show that the dropout rate reaches its peak of almost 13% in Class V, when a girl is expected to reach puberty. The teachers do not have a dedicated washroom for themselves either.

ACTION

PLAN OF ACTION

Vikasana aims to address the sanitation problem in Sri Vidyanikethan school by constructing three toilets for female students with proper sanitation facilities. The idea is also to install all fittings and water tanks for the toilet to become operational from Day 1.

EXPECTED IMPACT

EXPECTED IMPACT

Sri Vidyanikethan School is a private school located in Medahalli, which was started by an engineer-dentist couple who wanted to contribute towards education in under-served areas of Bangalore. Since private schools face major obstacles in obtaining funds from the Government, they rely on private funding from corporations and individuals for infrastructure development.

With this project, we hope that toilet : student ratio improves and the drop-outs and inconvenience caused to students and teachers alike, get reduced significantly.
