Most girls in India do not know about menstruation being a natural process before their first period and 10% of them believe that menstruation is a disease. Not to forget that around 23% of adolescent girls in the age-group 12-18 drop out of school after they begin menstruating and those who are in school absent themselves for an average of five days a month. Such instances in turn create a deep-rooted taboo among girls and cause a multiplicity of problems. Samridhdhi provides bridge schooling to out-of-school children with a goal to induce them into a government school. The organization aims to equip girls of 9 years of age and above with the necessary knowledge around menstruation, puberty, personal hygiene and pretty much all the adolescent changes girls undergo. Menstrupedia, with its impact footprint, seems like a great option, also because in-class trainings will be conducted through digital modes to shatter myths pertaining to periods.
Menstrupedia is an entertaining and interactive educational comic book about menstruation that provides a friendly guide to periods helping girls stay healthy and active during their cycle, thus removing the taboo about the entire concept. The accompanying training video for teachers makes it extremely easy and comfortable to conduct a menstrual awareness workshop as well. Samridhdhi Trust will get 100 copies of this comic printed at a heavily subsidized rate and will distribute them among 3 bridge schools for out-of-school children in Bangalore. They aim to follow a transfer model i.e. once a girl completes reading the comic, it shall be transferred to another one for the same purpose. They shall also be following a peer-to-peer education model wherein senior students shall share the knowledge gained with their juniors.
Since the target group belongs to children from low-income families who have been out of school and usually have uneducated parents, it would be good for these adolescent girls to learn about menstruation for the first time in this entertaining and interactive manner rather than the traditional way which simply leads to “don’t touch the pickle” syndrome. Apart from imparting education on menstrual hygiene, this project would indirectly improve their attendance rates in school which undoubtedly helps with scoring better. The transfer cum peer-to-peer education model helps build trust and a sense of community among the target group which would enable them to maintain dignity as adults in society. Aditi, the founder of Menstrupedia, has created a revolution by intervening in 7 countries, 50 schools, 10 NGOs and reaching out to 25,000 girls so far.
