After working for over two years with primary school children inside MCD schools in the Kalyanpuri-Kichripur area of East Delhi, AMMT has now opened a remedial school (Ananda) for underprivileged children in Kalyanpuri in East Delhi. Almost all the teachers (now seven in number) are from the surrounding community, and have been products of the same mindless pedagogy that is prevalent in government schools even now. They have grown with Ananda and have seen the beneficial impact of creative methods of teaching on young children. Yet, much of the teaching tools used are made in-house by the teachers and we can benefit from a professional-made math kit that respects our pedagogy principles. We also have an SLU (Slow Learner Unit) with 14 children identified by our teachers to be at the lower-end of the spectrum of ‘learning abilities’, who may be suffering from various forms of neurologically generated learning disabilities such as Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia, and associated co-morbidities such as ADHD. These children are given additional time and effort by our teachers every day and will be one of the primary beneficiaries of the kit.
The remedial classes are run every day of the week, Saturday being the library day, when children read on their own. There are 60 children who are divided in groups according to their learning levels. Seven teachers take cares of small group of 5-10 students. The two-hour long tuition classes focus on reading, writing and mathematics fundamentals. The “slow learner” children often stay for an extra hour. The kit will be used in both regular and special sessions. Every teacher and children group will use the kit for one session at least once a week.
We expect that the IDEK Mathematics Kits will fit in beautifully in our pedagogic tool kit, since these promise to be manipulable, sturdy, and attractive. We have seen that our children learn the basic arithmetical concepts with a lot more enthusiasm when tactile methods are used. As for our teachers, we are positive that they will be happy with the kits as they have come to be fond of not just our children but of also of the pedagogic methods we use in Ananda. Moreover, monitoring and periodic evaluation of children’s progress in cognitive and non-cognitive skills is routinely done at Ananda. Apart from literacy tests and tests in basic mathematical concepts administered thrice a year, we also regularly administer some psychometric tests, some of which have been developed by the reputed clinical psychologist Prof. Malavika Kapur of NIMHANS for our exclusive use, in order to assess changes in non-cognitive skills of children. We expect to see discernible changes in the mathematical aptitude and perhaps also non-cognitive skills of our children.
