THE NEED

THE NEED

With about 120 students spanning Standards 1 to 7, the Government Kannada Medium Primary School, presents a slightly depressing sight when it comes to infrastructure. In absence of tubelights, the children rely on natural lights coming from a window. As much as these young ones are keen to play, the land surrounding the school building is all concrete and empty. Teachers refrain from letting the children play outside as they are prone to falling down and bruising themselves on concrete. They get one hour of play period every week, where they are kept under the close supervision of Teach for India Fellows. Often during recess, they eat inside their classes. The school also lacks a library and a reading area.

ACTION

PLAN OF ACTION

A small area (measuring 4X4 m) outside the classroom where the children usually take breakfast, is going to be converted into a play area, with some swings, slides and sand below. The breakfast area would rather move inside the building. Though this would not suffice the need of the school completely, this installation would at least make the children feel that their school does not miss the basic play area. Since the school lacks an empty room to dedicate a library, we shall allocate the complete backside of the wall of a classroom to deck it with shelves and some books, both Kannada and English. The booklist shall be compiled by the Teach for India fellow and shall be procured locally.

EXPECTED IMPACT

EXPECTED IMPACT

The playground shall serve to induce agility, creativity and tact to young children. Moreover, it shall improve the look of the area, make children excited about coming to school and give confidence to teachers to allow them to play outside once in a while. The library set up would have obvious benefits in improve the access and affordability of books among children.
