Government Urdu & English Higher Primary School is a three-storeyed concrete building. A part of the first floor situated outside the concrete cover, which has a floor area equivalent of two classrooms, has been covered with a set of asbestos sheets. The asbestos roof cover is fairly old and has developed major cracks and holes across its surface area. This leaky roof of the school needs urgent repair. When it rains, the classes get disturbed and the walls get damp by soaking water. This adversely affects the quality of learning and poses hygiene issues.
Since re-installing the roof would be an expensive exercise, the Vikasana and the Teach for India team have conducted a site assessment and identified a set of 23 sheets which need to be replaced. The goal is to finish the installation process by the end of October.
Better roofing would mean better protection from rains, which in turn means reduced disturbance during classroom hours. The team hopes that this would go a long way in ensuring a good learning environment and subsequently improve outcomes.
