THE NEED

THE NEED

Going to school is not a priority for children from migrant families near our school coming from a poor economic background. So we planned to do something for these children. We decided to start a free computer learning centre at our school campus to encourage these children to attend school. We chose this solution because we felt that computers are the best way to generate curiosity among them towards studying.

ACTION

PLAN OF ACTION

Step 1 -> Identification of the migrant children: This was done by the household survey conducted by the students.
Step 2 -> Interaction with parents: Parents were motivated regarding sending their children to school and computer centre.
Step 3 -> Planning of Computer centre: A computer centre was planned inside the school campus so that necessary arrangement could be provided. The computer centre was designed with various TLMs and computers.

We first shared the ideas with our head teacher who suggested us to visit and interact with affected families to get our first batch of learners onboard. Then we converted one classroom in our school into a computer class. With the help of teachers, we finalised the teaching schedule and arranged the required teaching aids. It was decided that on Saturday and Sunday the school students of Majra will provide Computer training to the migrant ones.

EXPECTED IMPACT

EXPECTED IMPACT

The learning centre has the capacity to teach at least 30 students on a quarterly basis. About 20 students were benefited by the project. An assessment test on the monthly basis had been done and a final test after completion was conducted to assess the learning level. The project resulted in the migrant children to understand computer basics. And now they are enrolled in nearby schools and their study has been streamlined.

The centre will continue at the school premises. Its timing will be rescheduled and more number of school children will be motivated to undertake the project. Around 40 more students are available in the area who can get benefit from the computer class.
