Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) was started on 15th December 2000 to educate and empower underprivileged children and support them till they are gainfully employed. ACT started with 9 children from one slum. Initially we helped the children by paying their educational fees and helping with their study skills. As of 2015-16, we have 300 children (200 girls and 100 boys) with us. 

When we began, education meant paying the children's fees and helping them improve their study skills. Now, the education that every child at ACT gets is an all round development programme that ensures every child's physical, mental and emotional Wellness. Every child receives 7 different interventions: 

  • Educational fees, 
  • Educational tuitions (study skills), 
  • Quality health care including vaccinations, 
  • Hobby classes, 
  • Computer literacy, 
  • Financial inclusion by starting savings bank accounts, 
  • Mentoring & Counseling


In 2000, we paid the fees of 9 children from 1 slum. Over the past 17 years, we have grown consistently and are now able to provide academic, social, counselling, mentoring, vocational, health and financial interventions to 384 children in 14 schools and colleges across 9 slums in Bangalore. Till date, 26 children have successfully graduated from ACT and secured their dream jobs.

We follow the World Health Organization's Community Participatory Model and have for the last 16 years been integrating the under-served into mainstream society. We believe in giving everybody an opportunity. People of the community provide their financial and skill sets to uplift the under-served section of our society. We run all our programs through volunteers from all walks of life. ACT provides quality of life, health care, employment opportunities to children living below the poverty line. The Trust also looks towards empowering the mothers of the children who are uneducated and therefore economically challenged. These interventions help mothers and children safeguard themselves from the fathers who are mostly unemployed and alcoholics.

We apply Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) to achieve our mission. The MI theory states that all of us have 8 different intelligences and that maximum efficiency and productivity in a person depends on whether they are working at jobs that map in with their dominant intelligence. 

In order to determine each student’s dominant intelligence, we involve the children in various activities and team events that are tailored to suit the various intelligences: for example – dance for kinesthetic intelligence, painting for spatial, life skills workshops for intra personal intelligence etc. 

Based on the children’s performance they are assigned to higher level courses so that they get maximum opportunities to hone their dominant intelligence. We believe in also getting them jobs that are suited to these intelligences. Since we are volunteer-run, we are able to involve all the skill sets of people in and around our operations and share the same with our beneficiaries. Education is tailor-made to suit the needs of the children we support. Hence, depending on the talent of each child, we are able to provide either mainstream education or skills training so that every child who leaves the Trust has befitting employment. All our children are well-behaved, friendly, socially adjusted and work well in team activities
