It is a customizable book that actually talks to the person in his or her local language, delivering critical information in an interactive, relevant and educational way. Arming the world’s most impoverished communities with critical, life-saving knowledge that can help them to live a better life.
Speaking Books can be seen, read, heard and understood, delivering unprecedented value to low-literacy communities around the world. It work with leading global health and development organizations to create and distribute Speaking Books around the world. Its partners are experts in their fields and geographic locations, and it relies on their knowledge to create relevant and meaningful content for each book. Through the extensive network, it find local celebrities to record the voice behind the Speaking Book to ensure all the information is conveyed through the voice of a trusted authority. The partners ensure that the books are distributed in the designated communities and supported by community workers for sustainable and long-term education. To date, they have distributed 500,000 books in 30 countries, written and recorded in 35 languages and spanning nearly 70 different topics.
Although education is a basic human right, nearly 785 million children, youth, and adults around the world are illiterate. That’s one in five people on the planet that are either completely illiterate or functionally illiterate, meaning they cannot perform basic tasks such as reading medicine or food labels. Two thirds of the illiterate community is women. But access to critical information means better health, education, and income – especially for women and children. The concept of a book that talks is not new, but the idea of bringing together international organizations to create books about relevant and meaningful topics that can then be heard and understood by the most impoverished communities, is finally bridging the communication gap.
Access to health and development information in a format that is easily understood by communities empowers people to take charge of their health and their lives for a better future.
Based on research conducted by UNICEF, each Speaking Book reaches over 120 people, meaning that for $10/book, messages are delivered for cents on the dollar.
