Solar Conduction Dryer is a solar powered food dehydrator. The machine reduces moisture content in agri-produce so that farmers and food processors can preserve their produce( fruits, vegetables, fish etc.) up to 1 year and earn additional income through sells of dehydrated products.
Solar Conduction Dryer (SCD) works on the principle of conduction, convection and radiation modes of heat transfer. The structure/skeleton is made up of stainless steel for durability and food safety. It also consists of a 4 Nos. of 1m 2 square Trays made from aluminum sheet and insulation of PU Foam. The trays are coated with matt black food grade powder coating which acts as collector as well as loading area. A PC Multiwall sheet is used as the glazing material, installed on the top of the tray. This PC sheets also filters the UV rays and thus helps to keep the colour, aroma and nutritional content of the food material intact. A chimney like structure is formed along the longitude of the dryer at the center of dryer, which allows air flow from the open end to the top and thus eliminates the need of any forced draft using fan or blowers. Due to its design, SCD is free from any electronic component and thus completely maintenance free.
In Solar Conduction Dryer, it was the first time that all the three modes of heat transfer viz. conduction, convection and radiation were used together. It increased the efficiency of the dryer and thus reduced the drying time of the material. Also due to its design, any need of forced draft was eliminated and thus capital as well as life cycle cost of the dryers was reduced.
Solar conduction dryer(SCD) is solar thermal power based application that will save 50 Ton CO2 in its 10 years lifespan.
SCDs can process the food at zero operational cost and thus help to lower down the post harvest food losses that are about 35% of total production .
Per sq. meter cost of SCD is below US$ 150, which is almost 40 % cheaper than existing Solar Dryers.
