Sehgal Foundation has designed a unique model high pressure recharge well that harvests rainwater and stores it within a saline aquifer by forming a pocket of fresh groundwater.
Sehgal Foundation’s recharge well is sunk to a depth lower than the existing groundwater level. When rainwater enters this well, the hydrostatic pressure pushes away the existing saline water aside and forms a pocket of freshwater within the saline the fresh water taking its place. Sehgal Foundation also forms community-based groups to aid with the process of implementation, if a particular village situation demands for it, and then facilitate formation of water users groups, train the group members about the benefits and, operation and maintenance of the structures.
To create an adequately sized pocket of freshwater within a saline aquifer, it is necessary to increase the hydrostatic pressure. By designing the recharge well with walls of greater height above the ground and to a greater depth into the aquifer, hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to enable the rainwater to push aside the existing saline groundwater even in shallow aquifer and form a sizeable pocket of harvested rainwater within the saline aquifer. The pressure exerted by the surrounding saline groundwater keeps the rainwater pocket intact. A hand pump is used to extract the harvested water. This innovation cuts down the need of expensive construction of water storage tank as it stores the rainwater within the aquifer.
This solution helps in recharging and augmentation of groundwater, dilution of biological and chemical contaminants in groundwater including reduction in rate of advancement of groundwater salinity and spread
Increase in water availability for drinking, household use and livestock, Increased time available for other productive activities saved from fetching water, Increase in food security, Increased retention and enrolment in schools, Reduction in women drudgery, Decrease in water-borne diseases and therefore loss of wages, More study and play time for children
Sehgal Foundation's solution helps in reduction of household expenditure on water, and employment of the community through the construction of these wells. Fresh and clean drinking water reduces health-related expenditures and increases agriculture and livestock productivity.
