Niramai is a low-cost, accurate, automated, portable cancer screening tool that can be operated by a low-skilled clinician. Our method is radiation free, non-touch, not painful and works for women of all ages. The core technology is a diagnostic platform that uses thermal image processing and patented machine learning algorithms for reliable and accurate breast cancer screening. This unique solution can be used as a cancer diagnosis test in hospitals, used for regular preventive health checkups, and also for large scale screening in rural and semi-urban areas.
NIRAMAI stands for "Non-Invasive Risk Assessment with Machine Intelligence." Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women today. Our solution can detect cancer at a much earlier stage than traditional diagnostic methods and self-examination and can therefore improve survival rates. Our method of breast cancer screening can detect tumors earlier than clinical exam; is non-contact, painless and free of any radiation, apart from being low-cost, and universally accessible. With our solution, women of all age groups can undergo frequent screening without any side-effects. The core of NIRAMAI solution is Thermalytix, a computer aided diagnostic engine that is powered by Artificial Intelligence. The solution uses a high resolution thermal sensing device and a cloud hosted analytics solution for analysing the thermal images. Our SaaS solution uses big data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning for reliable, early and accurate breast cancer screening. The software has shown over 90% accuracy in clinical trials and was able to detect cancer lesions as small as 4 mm with no palpable lumps.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women today. According to WHO, one in every 12 women have the risk of a breast abnormality. Indian women have only about 50% chance of survival. Early diagnosis is very critical to decrease mortality rates. Most common methods used for cancer screening today is Clinical Examination, Mammography and Ultrasound. Among them mammography is considered as a gold standard for breast cancer screening. It uses X-rays to screen the breast region and digitizes the density difference in image format. Typically, cancerous tumor has high density compared to surrounding region and can be easily distinguished from other regions. But mammography has following disadvantages:
a) High cost b) Low Sensitivity towards Younger Women c) Risk of Radiation d) Fear and Pain due to compression of breast e) Privacy f) Need for experienced technicians.
Among other modalities, clinical breast exam can detect lumps but only when they are large enough to be palpable and result in many false positives as not all lumps are cancerous.
NIRAMAI team has pioneered Thermalytix, a technique that uses their patented artificial intelligence algorithms over thermal images of the subject to enable a non-contact, non-invasive, end-to-end privacy aware breast cancer screening solution that requires minimal skills to operate. The solution is a low cost, portable cancer screening tool that can detect early stage cancer with an ability to see abnormal cell activity much earlier than palpable lumps.
The core solution is a cloud-hosted computer aided diagnostic software developed by NIRAMAI. The sensing used by NIRAMAI uses Thermography which shows the earliest signs for breast cancer screening based on the fact that the metabolism in the tumour will be higher than the neighboring tissues. Additionally, the blood vessel activity surrounding a developing cancer is has a typical thermal pattern and will be almost always higher than in normal breast tissue. Since breast tissue is part of the skin, vascular alterations due to cancer result in temperature changes on the surface of the breast which can be captured with infrared thermography. Thermal abnormalities identified with thermal imaging are among the earliest signs of a pre-cancerous or cancerous lesion of the breast. While every malignancy will show a hotspot, not all hotspots in thermal images are cancerous. So, NIRAMAI has developed an artificial intelligence model that was trained using historic data to analyse the images to differentiate cancer versus noncancerous tissue. Since thermal cameras are small, they are very portable and can be used for screening in rural camps. The first version of this automated diagnostics software to identify suspicious malignancy has shown good accuracy (over 90%) on 8500 plus subjects.
Does not have any consumables so there is a lower rate of replacement.
There is a lot of social stigma around breast cancer screening due to loss of privacy and fear of pain. Other methods of detection like Clinical breast Exam or Mammography involve loss of privacy and applying weight of approximately 20kg on woman's chest (in case of mammography). Niramai solution does not require anyone to touch or see the patient. It is a privacy aware and painless solution and hence has higher acceptance among women. We expect to reach more number of women as a result of these. Further, as the solution can detect lumps which are much smaller in size we can detect cancer at an early stage. Early stage detection of cancer can significantly increase the chances of survival and reduce treatment cost.
The Niramai screening is available at Rs. 500 - 1500 which is much lower than mammography, charged at Rs. 3,500
