“Nirgandh” are stench free, inexpensive, easy to assemble , water-efficient, no flush toilets. The Bio-Reactor tank never needs to be emptied and cleaned , therefore, eliminating Manual Scavenging. These sturdy, long life, low maintenance units accelerate behavioral change against Open Defecation .

“Nirgandh” toilets are stench free toilets. These Bio-digester toilets use a special bacteria to convert solid fecal matter into water and traces of methane. The bacteria does not have to be replenished as it regenerates itself. The tank in which the fecal matter is converted to water and methane has a retention matrix to prevent bacteria washout in case of excessive water use. The bio-digester tank, in which the fecal matter falls, does not have to be emptied-ever, unlike in septic tanks. Thus, it eliminates the need for manual scavenging. The water consumption is low as these are non flush toilets. About 1 liter water is used only for self-cleaning. At the end of the day the toilet floor and toilet bowl can be cleaned with about 2-3 liters of water. Such toilets are very useful in water deficient, rocky and sandy terrains. With suitable materials of construction like stainless steel and high grade plastics, the toilet cabin can be kept clean and remain in use for many years with little or no maintenance effort or cost (under Rs.100 per month). Output water can be treated inexpensively to render it pathogen free for reuse in floor cleaning, household gardening. Easy assembly from a packed carton of components and sub assemblies and installation will promote self-employment and livelihood opportunities for local people.

The innovation

THE INNOVATION

Government of India estimated in 2015 that India needed 110 m household toilets. Out of these, about 40% brick and mortar units have been constructed. Newspaper reports claim that more than 50 % of these are unusable and behavioral change against Open Defecation is very low. The factory made “Nirgandh” low cost Toilets address the challenge of a competitive price, slow and poor construction quality and low maintenance effort &cost. Additionally output water can easily and inexpensively be rendered pathogen free, so that ground water resources are not contaminated but be reused safely unlike pit latrines.

Environmental Impact

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

The quantity of water required for defecation will reduce and Ground water resources will not be contaminated as from pit latrines.

SOCIAL IMPACT

SOCIAL IMPACT

Improvement in female health and reduced stunting and poor mental development in children.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

ECONOMIC IMPACT

Impact of reduced Open defecation saves about one hour of working life per day per individual which translates to 6 to 8% of per capita output .
