This low cost shredder powered by a 2 hp motor is portable and can cover mounds of dry leaves accumulated over large areas. It is ideal for gardens, parks and public places where leaves fall from many trees and pose a problem and a fire and smoke hazard if set on fire. The shredded material is excellent for organic composting.
During the months of January to April every year there is fall of leaves from all trees which populate parks, gardens and public places. The present method of collection and disposal is a laborious process. Large manpower is used to sweep, collect and load these leaves into trucks for transport to central composting centres in the city. In many cities only one central composting centre is present. The volume of leaves is so large that handling the material is costly and time consuming. Many a time the workers set fire to the dry leaves generating smoke, flying debris and mounds of ash. This activity is very polluting and damages the air quality. Besides smoke, the particulate matter in the flying debris is injurious to health if inhaled. This Shredding machine which is powered by a 2 hp motor can shred and powder the dry leaves in situ. At the place where the leaves have fallen a simple hand raking operation by a worker will collect the material in heaps. The Shredding machine chops and shreds the leaves reducing the volume and pulverising the large leaves. Leaves come in different sizes and shapes depending on the type of tree from which they have fallen. Teak leaves are really large and jackfruit tree leaves are tough and oily. The machine can be taken from heap to heap around the garden or park and shredding done in situ. The lightweight machine with a long trailing cable maximises its reach over a large area. The investment on the machine is paid back in a short time by means of savings in manpower, handling and transport costs. The shredded leaves are straightaway used for organic composting in situ.
The idea of the shredding machine is innovative because it is low cost ( approx Rs 20,000/- ) and light and portable. It avoids expensive manpower, handling and transport costs. The machine can be operated by semi skilled people and it is robust and handy in operation. The disc cutter blade is made in special alloyed steel and has a long life. It is important to note that the leaves have to be fully dry. Otherwise the cutter will jam if the material is damp and wet. In special cases a solar drier is provided for drying the leaves before shredding.
Prevents burning of leaves and polluting the atmosphere. It substantially reduces release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere thus reducing the greenhouse effect.
The shredding machine generates shredded and powdered material for quick and easy organic composting as against chemical fertilisers.
The main cost elements in the shredding machine are the 2 hp electric motor and the alloy steel fabricated disc cutter. The frame of the machine and the feeding and cutting chambers are fabricated from low cost steel tubes, sheets and plates. Any small scale fabrication and machine shop can make this machine using readily available sketches and drawings.
