Tactopus is a learning assistant that provides timely audio labels, explanations, and sound effects as a child explore tactile graphics by touch. The tactile books are designed for children to learn independently, even without the help of special educators.
The inspiration of Tactopus started with the observation that the educational material available to blind children is largely in the form of braille books or audiobooks. Essential components of learning such as the images, drawing, diagrams were missing. These learning aids are usually communicated with the help of tactile graphics, which are not commonly available in India. Even when they are, children require the guidance of special educators to make sense of them. Tactopus have designed a learning experience using tactile material and a device that provides an audio guidance as a child explores tactile graphics. Content booklets are created as supplementary to the school curriculum, such as a tactile atlas, introductory biology, etc. Board games and multiplayer games are also designed using braille alphabet and number cards.
In India, there are an estimated 3 million children with visual impairment, while there are not enough proportionate number of well-equipped schools and trained teachers. Tactopus is addressing this gap through the innovative use of image processing technology to create audio guides so that children can learn independently and immersively.
Access to tactile education removes barriers for blind children who have the aptitude to pursue STEM subject but are unable to do so currently.
Compared to other technology solutions available, Tactopus is affordable and cost-effective, so that more children can benefit from it.
