Specially-designed Splitter boxes enable visually-disabled tele-callers to switch easily between the audio output of a computer (listening to the screen reader) and telephone (listening and responding to the caller).
A visually impaired person works on computers using the screen reader software which gives audio output. One of the most preferred jobs for a computer-trained visually-challenged person is that of a telecaller. In such cases, the job involves the person to answer incoming calls and respond to queries, and at the same time enter the data obtained on the telephone into the computer; it becomes a challenge to switch between both the audios. To overcome this challenge, a splitter box has been developed. The splitter box used at Enable India is made by a team of volunteers at Bosch in 2013.
The following cables are required to connect the splitter box to the phone and the computer.
1) v8 USB data cable which acts like a power source
2) RJ9 cable to connect to the telephone
3) 3.5mm jack male to male cable
4) A headset with/without mic as the job role may require
While several efforts have been made to equip visually-impaired with tools to integrate them in the workspace, most of those functioning as telecallers regularly face challenges pertaining to switching between the screen reader interface output and the caller's instructions. EnAble India and Bosch forayed into repurposing a splitter box to suit this use-case. This can be used by a person with vision impairment to listen to PC audio output, mobile and landline at the same time.
Utilizing an existing concept, the team innovated their way to solve this challenge for better efficiency.
Easy input audio switching reduces confusion, saves time of the caller, makes data entry error-free and thus helps in building greater efficiencies for people with visually-impairment who work as telecallers or customer support executives.
