Annie, is the world’s first braille literacy device that helps the visually impaired learn to read, write and type in braille, on their own. This innovation is solving the problem of the low braille literacy rates around the world through its one-of-a-kind braille ecosystem.

The Braille literacy rates around the world are abysmal - 10% in the US, 4% in the UK and less than 1% in India. Braille literacy rates correlate to employability which effects independence and quality of life. The current Braille teaching methods require continuous teacher supervision and handholding. At present, the most commonly used primary tools to teach braille include wooden blocks, marbles and plastic slates. Owing to the low number of Qualified Teachers for the Visually Impaired (QTVIs), the current methods have failed to penetrate a vast majority of the 285 million visually-impaired.

Annie, the world’s first Braille literacy device helps the visually impaired learn to read, write and type in Braille, on their own, through audio-guided gamified content. The interactive content on Annie is designed to keep the student engaged through lessons, games, and challenges built in partnership with Braille experts. The Braille literacy ecosystem also includes a companion app for the guardian/teacher to create content on their own, schedule tests/home-works and purchase curated content, and an analytics dashboard to monitor a student or a class’s progress.

Annie aims at becoming a part of a visually impaired person’s education from primary braille education to skill development.

The innovation

THE INNOVATION

All assistive technologies currently present for the visually-impaired rely heavily on prior knowledge of Braille and are driven towards content consumption, but there is no technology focus towards teaching Braille. It's akin to there being e-book readers but no methods to teach English. Annie is the only braille literacy device in the world that helps the visually impaired learn to read, write and type in braille, on their own.

Annie’s ever-growing interactive content is created in partnership with braille experts. Annie’s soft human voice guides students through interactive, engaging lessons, providing instant feedback, therefore addressing a major pain point of long feedback cycles. Annie being a connected device also ensures that Braille learning is a community activity - something it has never been.
