In our village, elders struggled to get education and sadly till date, have had no access to foundational reading & writing. In this situation, they all call their children or their neighbour's literate children for simple tasks like reading letters, newspaper, writing their personal letters etc. With poor learning levels among villagers country-wide, we realized that the energy of youth, if channelized well, could bring preliminary literacy in their families, to start with .
Firstly, we went to various pockets of the village and identified people who don't have reading and writing skills. Then we made a list of all these uneducated people and planned to gather all of them at a specified location every evening. Every evening, a group of us, students, joined these elderly and began teaching letters, words and fundamentals to them. We felt that this is a very essential component in reading and writing. Slowly and steadily, these people started to learn skills like writing their names and making signatures. This was a small win for us! We started with an illiterate lady, and explained to her how to build fundamental literacy skills. She was a respected member in the village community and shared this with everyone.
Outcomes of this project are very interesting and we are happy to say that now these people have got the necessary education level which helps them in following areas.
1. To travel from one place to another place without anyone's help
2. To read postal letters.
3. To manage banking procedures, like money deposition, transactions, withdrawal etc..
Our project has reduced the dependency from a small set of adults and now they are able to lead their lives without anyone else's support.
