THE NEED

THE NEED

LIKE A DOG’s primary aim is to benefit lives – of both human and animals – primarily through its Anti-Rabies Campaign for the stray dogs of Kolkata streets. Rabies is the world’s deadliest viral disease with a 99.99% fatality rate. In spite of having a cure that dates back to 1885, rabies has not been completely eradicated, killing approximately 55,000 people each year. Vaccination for a canine costs about Rs.220 (maximum), while that of humans’ costs approximately Rs.3000+. Moreover, those affected most, often cannot afford treatment. Even a slight reduction in cases will have a significant impact, as nearly 70,000 cases of the virus occur each year in India alone. Rabies is 99% fatal, 100% vaccine preventable. By vaccinating 70% of dogs, countries can create “herd immunity", effectively slowing the spread of rabies until it dies out entirely.

ACTION

PLAN OF ACTION

Networking- Like A Dog is teaming up with expert vaccinators and emphatic volunteers who will contribute in various ways to implement this project on ground. We have been working with "Mother's heart", a Kolkata based non profit organization that works for stray animals of the city. With the help of Mother's heart we have been undertaking sterilization of street dogs, primarily focusing on female dogs with areas with high dog density. All dogs are vaccinated (either at the clinic or have been vaccinated by us previously under our “ Rabies Free” campaign) and identified with individualized tattoos and an earmark. After surgery a veterinarian determines which dogs are ready for release and which need to stay longer. The average release time is 3.79 days for females and 3.25 days for males. The dogs are then returned to the areas where they were captured.

Awareness- It is important to note that while volunteers are out on the drives, they make it a point to interact with locals, understand whether or not there are caregivers to dogs, educate them on the vaccine they are administering and help spread awareness about this deadly disease. Community engagement is a must.

EXPECTED IMPACT

EXPECTED IMPACT

With the funds, Like a Dog aims to vaccinate 500 dogs/month within a given area of Kolkata. Additionally, we seek to undertake sterilization drives side-by- side, with the aim of spaying 20 dogs/month. With blazing summers just a month away, we also plan to start a ‘water bowl project’, i.e., distribute specially-designed terracotta bowls to maximum number of small shops, offices and other public spaces across the city so that stray animals have effective access to clean drinking water at all times.
