THE NEED

THE NEED

Pushpa is a fourteen year old girl who studies at the Government High School, Somenahalli, Gudibande Taluk, Chikballapur District. Everyday, she walks several kilometer from her house just like 149 other girls from nearby villages to get a good education and to be able to go to college.

Sadly, the chances of her dropping out of school this year are really high. The reason for this isn't parental pressure but something as trivial as the absence of toilets in the school. Having no place to go and relieve themselves, Pushpa and her friends have to resort to walking long distances to use toilets of neighbors or not going to school at all.

Is this right? Should such a fundamental issue stop Pushpa from following her dreams completely?

ACTION

PLAN OF ACTION

Partnering with the Selco Foundation, Gramaantara Trust is building such a toilet complex with 4 toilets and urinals each in the school, and the work is currently ongoing. We aim to complete this project in the next three weeks from now.

We have consciously chosen to install a Bio toilet, which treats and decomposes Human Excretory Waste in the digester tank using specific high graded bacteria further converting it into methane and water, discharged further to the desired surface. This would be a great value-add in terms of ensuring maintenance of the toilet complex.

EXPECTED IMPACT

EXPECTED IMPACT

This project aims to stop girls dropping out of schools because of a lack of toilets, and wants to help them have a hygienic and sanitary transition into adulthood. The best case scenario for this project would be decreased drop out rates along with a general uplift in the awareness of hygiene as well as the girls being at ease and going to school without worry. The parents would also be comfortable sending their girls to school knowing that their sanitary well being is taken care of.

Toilets are something that we all take for granted, but in reality not everyone has this luxury. Let's transform this fundamental need into a reality for these girls.
