THE NEED

THE NEED

The Upgraded Government High School in Sonaganahalli Village in Gauribidanur, has started morning and evening remedial classes for students of Standard 10, to help them perform better in the upcoming examinations. Frequent power cuts in nighttime is posing a huge problem in the school's efforts to do so. Considering that all the students come from extremely poor financial backgrounds, they are incapable of making any arrangements to overcome this situation.

ACTION

PLAN OF ACTION

Under this project, 50 students studying in Grade 10 at Upgraded Government High School in Sonaganahalli Village in Gauribidanur will be provided with a portable LED solar lamp. The child brings the rechargeable battery of their lamp to school every alternate day for charging at a solar charging station installed at the school. This provides the child (and his/her siblings) 6-8 hours/day of continuous, bright, clean and safe light as compared to what they would otherwise use (kerosene lamps/candles). Once the child finishes 10th grade, the lamps are returned to the school for the next batch. SELCO Foundation, a pioneer in solar technology does the installation for the project. For every Rs.1074 raised here, a matching contribution shall be made by Menda Foundation. The net cost of each lamp (including the solar panels, charging stations etc.) is INR 2200.

EXPECTED IMPACT

EXPECTED IMPACT

As a mini project of the LiFE (Light for Education) program, which is a proven model and has been implemented successfully in 20+ government schools in Chikkaballapur district around Bangalore, these lamps aid in education of high school goers. Solar lamps are environment-friendly with renewable energy tapped from the sun that is freely available. This is definitely a cheaper source than kerosene lamps which are harmful to health and for the environment.
The lifespan of each lamp is 5-8 years. Thus, each solar lamp can benefit at least 5 students over 5 years!
